Dragonflies of the North Woods by Kurt Mead is a comprehensive reference to all 102 species of North Woods dragonflies and some common damselflies.  This is the first field guide exclusively for the North Woods of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario. Here are some of the fascinating “winged dragons” you’ll meet...

  • The Common Green Darner makes a 1000 mile journey to the southern United States. Long distance migration isn't just for birds!

  • The Dragonhunter is so fierce it eats large butterflies and even other dragonflies!

  • The Skillet Clubtail, Widow Skimmer, Cyrano Darner and Stygian Shadowdragon. Learn how they got their colorful names.

Kurt’s innovative format makes field ID a snap!

  • Close-up color photos for over 100 dragonfly species

  • Fieldmark arrows point to the best distinguishing characteristics

  • Easy-to-use red-bar phenograms shows you when that species
    is on the wing

  • Black bars on each photo indicate actual dragonfly length

  • 200 color photos of ALL our North Woods dragonflies

  • Handy field guide size makes it easy to pack along

The first printing of Dragonflies of the North Woods sold out in 2006 and Kollath-Stensaas Publishers have reprinted it.  This is not a revised edition, but Rick and Sparky agreed, out of the goodness of their tender hearts, to add a bunch of really helpful illustrations of the abdominal appendages of the Aeshna and Somatochlora genera.  The drawings take the guesswork out of identifying these species!
